Special Report:Prices of cash crops getting stable; poor formers take sign of relief

Giglit, November: Prices of indeginous cash crops have been gaining since last two weeks following intervention of local administration in artificially imposed prices by local and non-local agents across Gilgit-Baltistan. Local media sources raised the issue to urge local administration to ensure stability of prices of indegenous crops especially vegitables like Potato, Tomoto, carrots and fresh fruits namely Pear and apples to facilitate the only earning source of majority of disaster hit mountain communities in the region. Constant rise in essentials from down against lowering prices of indegnous products had annoyed local population that seem to transform since the begging of current month. According to regional analysts, extrapolation of data availble from statistics department idicates that local market forces must attain an equilibrium to a certain selling price that must ensure a reward of twelve months in hard climatic conditions.

Prices of Potato have been fluctuated by 100 percent from PKR 1000 to 2000 and Potatoes from 30 to 55 -pushing the transactions to the peak thereof. On the other hand, hike in petroleum products and LPG has intensify essential being brought from down cities to cater indigenous needs served to sky rocket prices locally. Constant rise in expenditures against decline in already meager income sources of majority of local population is making life for poor a hard job to cater their daily needs.

Environment day celebrations-IDPs of Salmanabad arranged envrironment protection walk

HUNZA, June 08: World community observed envirnment day on Saturday,fifth June, 2010 with zeal as usual. Internally displaced Persons (IDPs) of Salmanabad, who have been accommodated at Girls Inter College, Karimabad, Hunza arranged a special walk to mark the day. Students, teachers holding playcards marched from the Karimabad, temporary relief camp to Khurukushal, Hyderabad and to Aga Khan Academy, Baltit to give people environment friendly messages.

Similarly, Town Management Society (TMS), Karimabad also arranged a walk that finally assembled into a formal function at famous Pologround Karimabad. Participants holding beners bearing environment protection appeals marched along civil society members, Ismaili gents and lady volunteers, boys scouts of Karimabad and Altit jurisdiction.
Despite of numerous hurdles of Internally displaced Persons of Salmanabad at temporary relief camps, such activities will serve to give a positive message to every one of us to realize the responsiblity to care about environment.

HUNZA, Aliabad, June 01: Contrary to the claims of the region government and Pakistan army officials aired on different television channels a day before yesterday that more than six helicopters are ready to cope emergency at Aliabad temporary base and shift commuters as well as relief goods, mere a single helicopter continued to shift relief items: tents, medicines, cooking oil and public on Tuesday from 11:00 AM to 5: 30 PM.

Commuters stranded on both sides as they waited for helicopters since 9: 00 AM but failed to travel due to suspension of airlift for unknown reasons. Yet, the only helicopter employed to shift goods managed to make few turns to reduce pressure. Many people have reservations that people having acquaintance and recommendation of government and army officials were being sent earliest without prior registration that served to annoy a common man.

PML(N) should also announce any package for families of Kargil martiers says Shamim Baig

HUNZA, Altit, May 25: Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) should also announce any package for the families of martiers of Kargil war, took place between Pakistn and India in 1999. These views were expressed by Shamim Baig, a renown civil society member at IDPs camp Altit.Talking to media persons, she said that people of this area like others of Gilgit-Baltistan are hardworking one. "They have turned barren places into cultivated fields and orchards and any damage to their property will definitely hurt them mentally and physically as well", she added. She claimed Pakistan used to deploy people especially soldiers in crucial times like that in Kargil, who are later impersonate and given no reward in case of their death. She urged national government to announce any package to support those all families who lost their loved ones in the egoistic war of two countries.

Aavalanche hits Karimabad and Altit, fog and icy winds engulfed area for half an hour

HUNZA,Karimabad, Feb.25: A huge avalanche sliding from Ultar peak hit Karimabad and Altit village at 9:00 A.M, engulfed area for half an hour.

According to the details, suddenly fog and icy wind appeared above Baltit Fort soon cover major portion of Karimabad and Altit. Consequently, the area on both side of Ultar Nalah or Harchi indigenously called received light snow fall. Nevertheless, no loss of property or life has been reported.
According to local myth, breaking of ice from high rise glaciers begets good future and hinder evil forces like poverty and diseases.
