1.52 million cases pending in courts countrywide

ISLAMABAD, Jan.01: As many as 1.52 million cases were pending in the country’s courts until January 15, 2010, a number that could swell due to a shortage of judges in both the superior and subordinate judiciaries.After the imposition of the National Judicial Policy (NJP) on June 1, 2009, the Supreme Court has been able to reduce its backlog of cases from 19,055 to 18,312, until January 15 this year.The National Judicial (Policy Making) Committee, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, implemented the NJP on June 1, 2009 to tackle the increasing backlog of cases in the country’s courts and dispensation of speedy justice to the litigants.According to statistics, at the time the policy was announced, 19,055 cases were pending in the Supreme Court, 2,092 at the Federal Shariat Court, 84,704 at the Lahore High Court, 18,571 at the Sindh High Court, 10,363 at the Peshawar High Court and 4,160 at the Balochistan High Court.Whereas, on January 15, 2010 – seven and a half months after the policy was announced – 18,312 cases were pending at the Supreme Court, 1,680 at the Federal Shariat Court, 110,110 at the Lahore High Court, 29,414 at the Sindh High Court, 14,522 at the Peshawar High Court and 4,893 at the Balochistan High Court. At the time the NJP was enforced, 1,225,879 cases were pending in the subordinate judiciary in Punjab, 144,942 in Sindh, 187,441 in NWFP and 7,664 in Balochistan. However, on January 15, 2010, the number of pending cases in Punjab’s subordinate judiciary was 1,092,669, 115,994 in Sindh, 128,102 in NWFP and 6,322 in Balochistan.When the policy was enforced, it was announced that all fresh and pending cases in the Supreme Court and the high courts would be decided within a year and those in Balochistan within six months.Courtesy: Daily Times
